"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." -- Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear, from the book Dune.

Deeper issues of occultism/Dion Fortune
"A BRIEF NOTE ABOUT DION FORTUNE. Her real name was Violet Mary Firth, born Dec. 6, 1890 in Wales, of English parents and died in 1946. She became a Freudian analyst, then went deeper into esoteric studies. She was a member of the Golden Dawn but did not get on with Moina Mathers(nee Bergson) and left to form her own occult group in about 1926 which came to be called The Society of the Inner Light. She was a very powerful trance medium and a woman of strong character, so it was inevitable that she would form her own group. Her occult partners were Theodore Moriarty (her major teacher),Thomas Penry Evans
(her husband 1927-1939) and Charles Seymour became a Freudian analyst, then went deeper into esoteric..."

jason carr's mousepad: the Great Work - esotericism, practical occultism, pack reviews, ...
"about me bio / pics scooter in my experience wedding Storytime Transatlantic History Civic Wagon DFW food reviews The Great Work "The magnum opus is pre-eminently the creation of man by himself, that is, the full and complete conquest which he can make of his faculties and his future; it is pre-eminently the perfect emancipation of his will..." -- Eliphas Levi. The Great Work is the object of the Western Mystery ("Hermetic") traditions. On the immediate and more obvious level the seeker works to perfect himself, to grow like a lotus flower from the mud. Occult tradition holds that this "individual" development assists and accelerates the advancement of our species as a whole ("As it is above, so it is below"). In this manner, one's own practice is (in the macrocosmic view) also a social-global-universal act."

Occultism, Occult Arts, and Psychism: Theosophical Topics
"The term "occult" has noble, but largely forgotten origins. Derived from the Latin occultus meaning 'hidden,' it properly defines anything which is undisclosed, concealed, or not easily perceived. . . Writing a century ago, when the word had not acquired today's mixed connotations, H. P. Blavatsky defined occultism as "altruism pure and simple" -- the divine wisdom or hidden theosophy within all religions. Occultism is founded on the principle that Divinity is concealed -- transcendent yet immanent -- within every living being. As a spiritual discipline occultism is the renunciation of selfishness; it is the "still small path" which leads to wisdom, to the right discrimination between good and evil, and the practice of altruism. OCCULTISM REVISITED
"COPYRIGHT: 1998 Alexis Dolgorukii. In the period of history in which we are living, there is a very strong element of revolt. Revolt against all established institutions. This is good, as those established institutions are, for the most part, extremely oppressive of human personal liberty, and human freedom of thought. People are rightly perceiving all forms of government as basically more interested in their own power and profit than they are in the people they supposedly represent. People are tired of having their own futures and the futures of their children put at risk by the insane scramble for power among those who hold the reins of the various governments all over the planet."

THE CLAIMS OF OCCULTISM
[Vol. II. No. 12, September, 1881.] THIS is the heading of an article I find in a London publication, a new weekly called Light, and described as a "Journal Devoted to the Highest Interests of Humanity, both Here and Hereafter." It is a good and useful journal; and, if I may judge from the only two numbers I have ever seen, one whose dignified tone will prove far more persuasive with the public than the passionate and often rude remarks passed on their opponents and sceptics by its "spiritual" contemporaries. The article to which I wish to call attention is signed by a familiar name (nom de plume), "M.A. Oxon.," that of a profoundly sympathetic writer, of a personal and esteemed friend—of one, in short, who, I trust, whether he remains friendly or antagonistic to our views, would never confound the doctrine with its adherents, or, putting it more plainly, visit the sins of the Occultists upon Occultism and vice versâ.
