Mahayana Buddhism
"Theravada Buddhism focused primarily on meditation and concentration, the eighth of the Eightfold Noble Path; as a result, it centered on a monastic life and an extreme expenditure of time in meditating. This left little room for the bulk of humanity to join in, so a new schism erupted within the ranks of Buddhism in the first century AD, one that would attempt to reformulate the teachings of Buddha to accomodate a greater number of people. They called their new Buddhism, the "Greater Vehicle" (literally, "The Greater Ox-Cart") or Mahayana, since it could accomodate more people and more believers from all walks of life. They distinguished themselves from mainstream Theravada Buddhism by contemptuously referring to Theravada as Hinayana, or "The Lesser Vehicle." Philosophy of Religion: Buddhism by Eliade
"To begin with, this reading deals mainly with a form of Buddhism which is somewhat removed from what the Buddha taught. There is some debate about what that is, but a complete treatment of the beliefs of Buddhism would acknowledge the differing views of what 'path' the Buddha would have wanted people to take. At times I will refer in these notes to other sources on Buddhism, most notably the treatment of it in "The World's Religions" by Houston Smith. I will also refer at times to an older text, "Philosophies of India" by Heinrich Zimmer."

"The title Lankavatara might mean 'entering Lanka' (perhaps referring to the temporary Mahayana period of Ceylon), suggesting that the doctrines of this scripture are possibly consistent with earlier Buddhism preserved in the Pali language."
