Someone asked me why in the title of this talk I used the word "emptiness" in parenthesis after the word "self." According to Buddhism the answer is that "self is emptiness and emptiness is self." This answer, however, is too simple to comprehend... Any thoughts?

Contemplation and meditation on death and impermanence are regarded as very important in Buddhism for two reasons : (1) it is only by recognising how precious and how short life is that we are most likely to make it meaningful and to live it fully and (2) by understanding the death process and familiarizing ourself with it, we can remove fear at the time of death and ensure a good rebirth... If there were ever a stereotype of the "laughing saint," Sogyal Rinpoche would fit it perfectly. It's not that he's a comic, it's just that he makes you want to smile, maybe even laugh. While living at the Rajneesh ashram in India, I remember hearing Rajneesh telling the story of the laughing saints, and Sogyal brought back those memories... Any thoughts?
